“There are three stages to this game,” you quietly whispered to yourself. (e/c) eyes locked on the little opening in the room where the color of the sky matched the dreary, black walls. It was a moonless night…huh.

With your red head companion asleep, you were careful not to be disruptive.

You shifted your posture and continued the train of thought.

As a child, the game of hide and seek is all fun and games. Purely for entertainment purposes, the seeker may or may not get a reward for finding all of their hidden friends.

It was a pointless game, wasn’t it?

To run around in search of someone without necessarily getting anything in return is nowhere near fun by your current standards.

“So tell me…why am I still playing this game with you now?”

At the age of 25, this game wasn’t about fun anymore.
---
“One…two…three…” The numbers spilled out of the boy’s mouth as he stood in front of a tree and shielded his view while his friends scrambled for a place to hide.

“Ready or not, here I come!” He called out as a final warning, his red hair whipped behind him and he ran around the vicinity of the abandoned house that they claimed as their base.

“Nagisa, I found you! You don’t blend in with the flowers at all…”

Defeated, a blonde boy with bright pink eyes popped up from the flowerbed and jogged over with a pout at being the first one found.

“No fair Rin-chan! You should’ve pretended you didn’t see me!”
“Rin-chan” shot him a cheeky grin and dashed behind the shabby house where a circular blow up pool was filled.

“Haru…found you…” He announced to the raven-haired boy that rested in the cool water clad in a small pair of swim shorts. “Jeez, can’t you find a different place to hide? You’re always in the same place every time…”

He let out a sigh and scanned the surrounding area for any hints of Haru’s green-eyed companion who was bound to be close. The two of them were stuck like glue.

Rin’s ears perked up at the shuffling sounds coming from the bushes and a loud sneeze.

“Makoto, you can come out now.”

The taller brunette stood up with a reddening nose and stray leaves stuck in his hair.

“Ehehehe…” He chuckled and awkwardly scratched his head.

“Now for the last person…” Rin hopped into the base, which was basically a large room with various chairs and knick-knacks.

You held your breath as you spotted the older boy. Somehow, you had squeezed yourself into a small closet and peeked through the crack of the sliding door.

Rin looked all over the room, yet you were nowhere in sight. Not even in any of your usual hiding spots! His red eyes landed on the closet that he didn’t even bother to search. He was always skeptical when it came to that place, especially after Nagisa told him that there were some weird smells coming from that closet and he occasionally heard some suspicious squeaking sounds. (Really it was just Nagisa’s spoiled egg sandwich and the neighborhood mouse wreaking havoc.)

The boy was just about to give up when the door slid open and you tumbled out with your hand over your mouth.

“Gahhh it stinks in there!”

He ran up to you with a proud smirk as if he knew you were in there all along.

“Haha, I found you! You lose, (Name)!” He cheered pointing an accusing finger at you.

“W-well you found me, so what do u want!?”

“Hm…Give me a piggy back ride!”

“But you’re heavyyyyyy!” She complained but made her way to him anyways. “Shouldn’t Nagisa-kun be doing this? You found him first…”

The girl let out a strained gasp as she hoisted the boy up on her back.

“Nope. I want you to be the one.”

---
Your back collided with the wall in surprise as you blinked. A loud crash sounded from the outside along with two voices cursing at each other.

The person beside you jerked awake.

“(Name)-chan, what’s wrong!?”

“It’s nothing. Just the usual I guess. Don’t worry about it and go back to sleep, okay?”

The person nodded, strands of maroon hair fell in front of their red eyes.

A phone rang outside; you recognized it to be your ringtone. A man answered and the door swung open as he rudely entered. The phone was held in front of you with the speaker on.
“Hello?”
---
The second stage of the game took place when you were twenty, halfway into college and living with your childhood friend-turned-boyfriend.

Barely out of college and just entered the working society, he had applied to join the police force, a decision that shocked you. He proposed the two of you move in together and the rest was history.

From here on, this game had a purpose.

House keys jingled in his hands as Rin unlocked the door to the two-bedroom apartment that the two of you shared. He tossed the ring of keys on the dining table along with his navy blue uniform cap.

The redhead was about to take a step into the kitchen when he noticed a shirt lying on the floor. Not far from it, a pair of shorts was carelessly strewn over a lamp.

His eyes followed the trail of clothes leading up to the end of the hallway, enough to make a mother rip her hair out in frustration.

However, Rin was not a mother the last time he checked. He grinned, revealing the sharp daggers he called teeth, as he walked along the path. The mess of clothing and the absence of his girlfriend could only mean one thing.

First, he checked the bathroom. Other than the sound of a dripping faucet that annoyed him to no end, there was nothing.

Next was the guest bedroom. He flicked the lights on and the results were the same, much to his dismay. Girlfriend not found.

The light spilling from his dim bedroom was his only hint. The lights were off, with the only source coming from the closet.

He stomped in casually with his hands stuck in his pockets to see his love fussing over a new swimsuit.

“Ah Rin, good timing. Tell me, what do you think of this bikini?” You asked with her voice unnaturally high with a slightly teasing smirk.

“After all these years, you still like to hide in closets.” He commented, completely ignoring your question.

His arms slid around your bare waist as he relished the feeling of your soft skin against his palm.

“Stop it, that tickles!” You whined and gave his shoulders a small push, yet did not object when he leaned in to place his lips on the curve of your shoulder.

Her hands moved quickly to dispose his top; the buttons on his uniform came undone with skill and precision.

“Slow down, babe.” He whispered and gave your bottom a playful slap.

“Since when did you like to play slow, Matsuoka-san?” Your hand wandered lower until it reached the bottom of his black tank top and tugged impatiently.

He compiled and let you go to pull his shirt over his head. His fingers grazed the back of your thighs while you instinctively wrapped your arms around he neck.

He lifted you up and carried you to the bed that you two shared.

The second part of this game was to seek out all of your sensitive spots.

His lips pressed against yours for a brief moment for the usual welcome home kiss until his urges kicked in and trailed down past your soft mounds and along your stomach.

Your fingers knotted in his hair as his sharp teeth hooked on to your bottoms. His fiery eyes never left yours while he slowly tugged the flimsy material off.

He moved back up to capture your lips and his fingers danced along the inside of your thigh as they inched closer.

“A-ah!” You breathed out followed by a shaky moan as his fingers found their destination.

“I found it.” He whispered playfully into your ear.

---
…And the grand finale was now.
---
“(Name), where are you? We’ve been looking for two days and you wouldn’t pick up your calls at all! Is something wrong? Did I say something that got you angry at me?” The voice on the other end of the line spoke urgently, but his voice was enough to calm you…even though the peace was short-lived.

“Rin, relax. It’s okay. Everything will be okay. I’m…” You caught yourself before you continued as something cold was pressed against your temple.

The man sent you a warning glare.

“This...this is hide and seek, Rin. Remember how we used to play it all the time? On the count of three, you have to hang up and find me!” You managed a small laugh despite the tears that began to form.

“Wait, but-“

“One…two…three!”

Without any hesitation, he pressed the end call button. The man nodded in approval and removed the weapon against your head. His heavy footsteps gradually grew softer as he opened the door; bright light blinded you momentarily before it was shut again.
“(Name)-chan…” Your companion’s sudden whimper reminded you that you were not alone.

“It’s alright Gou, we’ll make it out of here alive. Rin will find us for sure, he’s the best at hide and seek. Don’t worry.” With your hands bound together by ropes, you couldn’t give her a reassuring hug, so you rested against her shoulder instead.

“I know…” She whispered, her voice laced with uncertainty.

“Trust him.”
---
It was supposed to be a fun shopping trip with just the two of you girls. You were supposed to go back to your home and have a small dinner with Rin like usual. She was supposed to be on her flight to America for that muscle show.

What was not supposed to happen was the two of you getting pulled into a black van on the way back while walking on a particularly deserted section of the city. She was the original target, you just happened to be there.

Your captors, a man and a woman with names unknown, only planned to take Matsuoka Gou, the younger sister of the same officer who put his brother and her husband behind bars. He didn’t last very long in that wretched environment, dying shortly of a disease he caught.

It was natural for them to seek revenge and it was all the more better when they figured out your relationship with him. They had no intentions to kill, no, they wouldn’t dirty their hands like that.

They knew, however, that the Matsuokas were far from poor. In fact, they were quite well off at the moment. Money is the answer to everything in this world after all.

Of course capturing two of the most important people in his life was a plus. Wouldn’t it be nice to see the look on his face when he finds out that his love is in pain?
They wouldn’t kill the girls, no, but they aren’t coming out injury-free either.
---
Three days went by along with a bag of money. Finally, the second round of communication with the police came.

A video call.

Your captors, with their faces hidden behind masks of popular icons, set up a camera and live streamed the footage to the station.

They did not speak, but the only sounds belonged to the muffled screams in the room. Words scrolled across the screen with their demands as Rin watched hundreds of meters away, unable to do anything and only drummed his finger on the shotgun that rested on his lap.

You bit your lip until it drew blood because it hurt, it really did. The sharp blade of a pocketknife slid across your cheek at a painstakingly slow pace. The droplets of your blood left a cold, crimson trail in a situation that mirrored your bloody lips.

Another mark was made on your cheek slower than a snail and you clenched your fingers until they dug into your skin and left deep marks. The two cuts formed an “X” on your face as a similar one was given to Gou as well.

It wasn’t over yet. The man twirled the blade around his fingers playfully before he stopped and sent the sharp tip straight down as it plunged into your thigh.

Your shriek pierced the silent house because it hurt more than any other pain you’ve felt. The wound was deep and it burned like a black hole slowly eating you away from the inside. Tears pricked your blindfolded eyes and the screams kept coming as calls for “Rin” was mixed along with your declaration of pain.

The former swimmer kicked his desk in protest as the video cut off after that; the picture frame containing a photo of the two of you knocked over. In a huff, he stormed right into his boss’ office. You’ve been hiding long enough.
---
Another two days have gone by before there was a sign of being rescued. The man went to pick up the money and never came back.

The woman paced back and forth, waiting for him all afternoon until night fell. Sirens wailed from afar and crept closer to the premise. However, it was much too early to celebrate.

Perhaps announcing their presence wasn’t the best way to save a couple hostages.

Your captor decided that if she wasn’t going to get out of here alive, then she would drag the two of you down with her.

The man had once instructed her that if the time ever came then there’s a jug of gasoline in the storage. She remembered his directions and poured the liquid around the area of the inside. From her pocket, she produced a match and the small shelter was engulfed in a sea of flames.
---
(Name)!” Gou coughed out as she tried to nudge your elbow.

“Gou…the knife. I think it’s still on the ground when the man threw it over there a few days ago. I think you can reach it right?”

“I think so…”

“Can you try to remove this blindfold for me?”

She did her best to scoot over and took the piece of cloth in between her teeth as she tugged it off. You did the same to her and she rolled off your makeshift bed and slithered towards the dagger with the ropes still tightly bound to her wrists and ankles.

All the while, gunshots were exchanged outside and orders were called out by the fire department.
“I got it!” Gou mumbled with the silver weapon wedged in her mouth.

You turned slightly while you ignored the slight sting on your thigh so that she could place the blade into your fingers and you flicked it around, trying to release the restrictions around her wrists despite being unable to see what was behind you.

“Almost there (Name)-chan...just a bit more…okay!” She took the knife from your grasp and sliced the rest of the ropes off with relative ease.

“Let’s go now!” She insisted and gave your hand a tug.

“No…you go ahead. I won’t make it far with this.” You gestured to your injured leg. “I can barely move it without it feeling like it’s about to tear me apart.”

“I’ll carry you then!” Her maroon hair flicked around as she offered to carry you on her back.

“Gou, it’s pointless. The two of us won’t make it far out so please, just go on without me.”

“There’s no time to be pulling the hero act now!” She cried just as a loud crash sounded from somewhere out the room. It was as if the house was falling to pieces.

“Gou, leave! We can’t keep arguing about this or we’ll both be toast! Go out there and tell your brother I love him, okay?” You pushed her forward with all the force you could muster in your weak state. Just managing to breathe was becoming a difficult task.

“But-“

“Leave. Now.”

Her eyes, a dull red from the lack of sleep, drooped down as she threw the door open and into the fire. The shouts outside were becoming more clearly to you now, as you could pick out several male voices and sounds of water hitting the side of the walls.

You coughed as the door disappeared into ashes and the flames consumed your room at a quick pace.

“Rin…” You whispered.

“(Name)!” Your inner self seemed to shout back.

“Rin…I…” You began as the sea of red finally overtook you.

“(Name)…”

It felt warm, like rolling around a pile of blankets in the winter. It smelt burnt but with a tinge of something familiar…

“Rin, can you hear me? Stay right where you are. We’re coming to get the two of you out. Makoto and the others are nearly done with taking out the fire. We’ll be right there so don’t move.”

Sousuke’s voice was raspy and crackled through the receiver. Why did he sound so worried?

Your nose brushed against something soft, which you identified as hair; more specifically, hair that belonged to your lover who was…acting like his usual, crybaby self.

“Why’re you crying, Rin?” Your fingers reached up to brush the clear drops away. “I’m fine so don’t cry. It’s okay.”

You moved closer to him as he flinched and you sat back to inspect him through hazy eyes. A hole tore through the navy fabric of his uniform, near his stomach. It was clear that a bullet could only inflict the hole.

“No big deal.” He assured you and pulled you closer to shakily press a kiss.
It was warm. Not only was the feel of his touch against your skin warm, but the whole room felt warm. Too warm.

Your eyes slowly blinked until they closed and you rested against his shoulder.

More yelling came from the outside and floods of water battled against the growing flames. You could recognize the voice of Makoto, Rin’s old friend, among the many other firefighters who were present to help.

They felt distant though, as your consciousness slipped away.

Rin’s warm lips rested against your forehead.

“I found you, Love.” He whispered.
**EDIT: Forgot to say this earlier but I've had a few people wonder about the ending...I can't say that the Reader and Rin both died...it's really up to you. Originally I was going to have one or the other actually die in the fic but I just couldn't decide which way was right so I left the ending open :icontuzkisweatdropplz:

I guess I wasn't really sure if the whole mature content thing was needed. I mean...there ain't much violence or anything...just hints lol but please let me know if it seemed like it would...

Halfway into writing this, I got kind of lost so I guess I can't say that I am really proud of this but I supposed I kind of tried to write differently than usual? XDD I don't even know myself...This turned out super long though...accidentally...there was just too much that I wanted to fit in....
